Home, Belonging and Onomatopoeia School Visit
Explore where children live around Australia what what makes a home
K-Year 2
Focus text: Our Home
Learning outcomes: onomatopoeia, home, identify, family, natural, managed and constructed environment
I use my picture book Our Home to explore where children live around Australia, onomatopoeia and what makes a home. In this workshop students will explore:
-
Where children live in Australia
-
What makes ‘a home’ including the people, animals and the natural, managed and constructed elements
-
Onomatopoeia for homes around Australia
-
Each student will come up with sounds for their own homes – this makes onomatopoeia meaningful for the students
-
I read Our Home and provide a behind the scenes insight into how Our Home was made – from initial idea to first draft to early illustrations to the final book
-
We end with a craft activity for children to create their own home and onomatopoeia – I provide all craft.

Testimonials
“We had the pleasure of welcoming Catherine Meatheringham for Book Week 2024. For our Year 1 and 2 students, Catherine read All Dogs Bark and Our home. Catherine focused on the use of onomatopoeia, making the story come alive with sounds that the students could mimic and enjoy and use in the craft activity - the students made their own paper house and describe the sounds we can hear in or around it.
The combination of storytelling and music and/or activity was a perfect way to engage our students and encouraging them to read.
I highly recommend inviting Catherine to share her books. Her passion for storytelling is evident, and her ability to provide a dynamic literary experience to the students was truly impressive.”

"Catherine's visit to Monash Primary School was the highlight of Book Week! The students were completely engaged by her excellent stories, as well as her fun and creative activities. Our students got to play in their own 'Possum Orchestra', and our Year 1 teachers were super impressed by the 'Our Home' craft session. Catherine was lovely to deal with and very responsive during the planning stages of her visit to Monash, and was generous with her time and advice during student question time."
